Brand Strategy for Drink Brands: ICP, Positioning, and Go-to-Market

How to define your ideal customer profile, craft a winning positioning statement, and build a go-to-market strategy that actually works for wine, spirits, and champagne brands.

Brand Strategy for Drink Brands: ICP, Positioning, and Go-to-Market

The most common reason drink brands fail is not product quality, distribution, or budget. It is a lack of strategic clarity. Brands that cannot articulate who they are for, what they stand for, and why someone should choose them over the competition will struggle regardless of how good the liquid is.

What Is Brand Strategy?

Brand strategy is the long-term plan for developing a successful brand in order to achieve specific goals. For a drink brand, it answers four fundamental questions: Who are you? Who are you for? Why should they choose you? And how will you reach them?

Defining Your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)

Your ICP is a detailed description of the person most likely to buy your brand. Not a demographic average — a specific, vivid portrait of a real human being. For a drink brand, your ICP should include: age, gender, location, income level, lifestyle (how they spend their time and money), drinking occasions (when, where, with whom), values and aspirations, media consumption (where they discover new brands), and price sensitivity. The more specific your ICP, the more powerful your brand strategy. "Premium spirits drinkers aged 25–45" is not an ICP. "A 34-year-old entrepreneur in London who drinks premium cocktails at boutique hotel bars, follows food and lifestyle content on Instagram, and is willing to pay £60 for a bottle of something genuinely special" is an ICP.

Crafting Your Positioning Statement

Your positioning statement is the internal compass that guides every brand decision. It typically follows this structure: For [target consumer], [brand name] is the [category] that [key benefit] because [reason to believe]. For example: "For ambitious professionals who celebrate life's milestones with intention, Cashcane is the premium rum that combines Caribbean craft with contemporary design because it is built by people who understand both worlds."

Building Your Go-to-Market Strategy

Your go-to-market strategy answers: Where will you launch first? Which channel — on-trade (bars, restaurants, hotels) or off-trade (retail, e-commerce)? What is your pricing architecture? How will you build awareness? Who are your first 10 accounts? For premium drinks brands, we almost always recommend an on-trade first strategy. A placement in the right bar or restaurant is the most credible endorsement a new brand can receive — and it creates the social proof needed to open retail and e-commerce doors.

The Brand Atelier Framework

Our brand strategy process covers all of this in the first two weeks of our 10-week program. We do not skip the strategy phase — it is the foundation everything else is built on. Every brand we build starts with a clear ICP, a sharp positioning statement, and a go-to-market strategy that is specific, actionable, and built for the real world.
