Creating a Champagne Brand: Everything You Need to Know

The prestige, the rules, the opportunity. A complete guide to creating your own champagne label — from the Champagne region to global markets.

Creating a Champagne Brand: Everything You Need to Know

Champagne is the world's most prestigious wine category — and one of the most accessible for brand creation. The Buyer's Own Brand (BOB) market allows entrepreneurs, retailers, and brands to create their own champagne label sourced from established Champagne houses and growers.

How Champagne Brand Creation Works

The most practical route to creating your own champagne brand is through a BOB arrangement with a Champagne house or récoltant-manipulant (grower-producer). You select a cuvée or commission a custom blend, create your brand identity and label design, have the champagne bottled under your brand, and distribute and market it as your own label. Minimum orders typically start at 500–1,000 bottles (approximately 42–84 cases).

Key Champagne Rules

Champagne is an AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) — meaning it can only come from the Champagne region of France, made from specific grape varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier), using the traditional method. Your label must comply with strict EU and French regulations, including the word "Champagne" in a specific font size, alcohol content (minimum 12% ABV), dosage declaration (Brut, Extra Brut, Demi-Sec, etc.), and producer and bottler information.

Building a Champagne Brand Identity

Champagne branding is about prestige, elegance, and occasion. Your brand needs to answer: what moment does your champagne celebrate? The most successful champagne brands own a specific emotional territory — celebration, femininity, luxury, rebellion, sustainability. Define yours before you design a single element.

Pricing and Positioning

Entry-level NV Brut: €15–25 at source, retail €35–60. Vintage: €25–50 at source, retail €60–120. Prestige cuvée: €50–150+ at source, retail €120–400+.
