A complete guide to launching a wine brand from scratch — sourcing, branding, compliance, and distribution. Everything you need to know before you start.
The global wine market is worth over $400 billion — and it has never been more accessible to create your own label. Whether you are an entrepreneur, an influencer, a restaurant owner, or simply someone with a passion for wine and a vision for a brand, 2025 is the best time in history to launch your own wine brand.
Step 1: Define Your ConceptBefore you think about grapes, labels, or pricing, you need to answer one fundamental question: what is your wine brand about? The most successful wine brands are not defined by what is in the bottle — they are defined by the story, the emotion, and the world they invite consumers into. Ask yourself: Who is your target consumer? What emotional territory do you want to own? What makes you different from the thousands of wine brands already on the market?
Step 2: Choose Your Wine CategoryThe wine world is vast. Narrowing your focus is essential. Still wines (red, white, rosé) represent the broadest market. Sparkling wines (Prosecco, Cava, Crémant) are growing fast. Champagne is the ultimate prestige category. Natural and organic wines are the fastest-growing segment. And 0% alcohol wines represent the new frontier — with massive growth projected through 2030.
Step 3: Find Your Wine SourceYou have three main options. Private label (white label) means sourcing existing wine from a producer and applying your brand — the fastest and most affordable route, typically €5–15 per bottle at source. Custom blend means working with a winery or négociant to create a blend specifically for your brand — more control, higher minimum quantities. Own production means buying or leasing a vineyard — the most authentic route, but requiring significant capital and time. For most new brands, private label or custom blend is the right starting point.
Step 4: Build Your Brand IdentityThis is where most brands succeed or fail. Your brand identity includes your brand name (must be legally available in your target markets), logo and visual identity, label design (critical for wine — the label is your primary marketing tool at point of sale), brand story and narrative, and your website and social media presence. Invest properly here. A €200 logo from a freelance marketplace will cost you far more in lost sales than you saved.
Step 5: Navigate ComplianceWine is a heavily regulated category. Key compliance requirements include label approval in each market, alcohol content declaration, allergen declarations (sulfites), country of origin labeling, and import licenses for international distribution. This is where working with an experienced brand-building partner saves enormous time and money.
Step 6: Go to MarketYour launch strategy should answer: Which market first? Start focused — one country, one city, one channel. On-trade (restaurants and bars) or off-trade (retail)? E-commerce? Social media and influencer strategy?
